Students
in EPK through the fifth grade receive Spanish instruction weekly as an
enrichment class. The purpose of the Spanish Program is to develop enthusiasm
for the language and its culture, while preparing students to learn the
basic Spanish vocabulary, pronunciation, and develop conversation skills.
Spanish classes promote respect for others who speak different languages,
as well as for others who live in different cultures. Living in the southwest,
a basic understanding of the Spanish language also helps a child in the
community and with future job opportunities.
St. John's Spanish program builds on the students' prior knowledge from
year to year. However, for a new student entering St. John's, the information
learned is not a prerequisite to having a successful year. Students will
acquire knowledge of basic vocabulary (i.e., body parts, colors, numbers,
alphabet, words associated with the classroom, home, etc.) and basic conversation
(i.e., greetings, niceties, etc.).
