Third graders in classClassroom hours are 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. An overview of the third grade program follows.

Reading
Open Court is our adopted curriculum which emphasizes learning through fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. The students will explore stories from around the world. Additionally, students are introduced to short novel studies as art of classroom instruction. The Accelerated Reader program is also used to build comprehension and track reading levels. Areas of study include, but are not limited to:

  • Comprehension Skills Development

  • Vocabulary Development

  • Study and Research Skills

  • Appreciation for various Genre of Literature

Spelling
Our spelling program emphasizes spelling correctly across the curriculum. Open Court uses rules and patterns to teach phonetic and sight word spelling. Students will have weekly spelling tests and participate in activities that include:

  • Dictionary & Thesaurus Practice

  • Alphabetizing

  • Vocabulary Expansion in Context

  • Alternative Lists of advanced students

Language Arts
In using the Open Court, students are exposed to various writing techniques and a broad base of language arts skills. Skills taught include, but are not limited to:

  • Capitalization and Punctuation

  • Listening and Speaking Skills

  • Complete and Incomplete Sentences

  • Writing and Composition

  • Parts of Speech and Sentence Structure

  • Suffixes and Prefixes

  • Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homophones

  • Contractions and Compound Words

  • Persuasive Writing

  • Listening and Speaking Skills

  • Writting and composition

Mathematics
Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive math curriculum that embraces high expectations with hands-on learning. It is a curriculum that emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills. Students will receive instruction in the following:

  • Basic Addition and Subtraction Facts to 18

  • Adding and Subtracting with Regrouping

  • Telling Time to one minute intervals

  • Counting and Spending Money including all coins and dollars

  • Geometric Shapes and Pre-Geometric Problems

  • Fraction Recognition

  • Numerical Order to 1000+

  • Number Relationships (<, >)

  • Linear Measurement

  • Multiplication and Division Facts

  • Application of Skills to Everyday Life

Social Studies
Harcourt Horizons People and Communities is our adopted curriculum. The units of study include but are not limited to:

  • Learning about Communities

  • Communites are Everywhere

  • Many Kinds of People

  • Citizenship and Government

  • Communites Over Time

  • Peple Working in a Community

The year culminates with the World Bazaar where students present individual in-depth research projects on various countries.

Science
Discovery Works is our adopted science curriculum. Science activities provide for the teaching of the basic elements that make up the scientific method. Topics of study include, but are not limited to:

  • Life Cycles of Animals and Plants

  • Earth's Resources

  • Sun, Moon and Earth

  • Roles of Living Things

  • Matter, Energy and Forces

In addition to classroom activities, the students receive instruction each week in spanish, P.E., library, art and music to include instruction in tonal chimes and recorders. During those times, enrichment teachers with specialized training for their particular area guide the children through lessons appropriate for their age level. They spend time in the computer lab twice a week, developing basic skills in operating the equipment, manipulating age appropriate software and continuing to practice basic keyboarding skills.

Third grade students attend Chapel three times a week. Bible stories are taught in the classroom and Christian morals are encouraged. Students are encouraged to memorize Bible verses, the Beatitudes, the Ten Commandments; the Lord's Prayer, and the books of the Bible.
