The Pre-K program focuses on active learning, concentrating on the development of number skills, and reading readiness skills, including letter names, letter sound recognition and high frequency words. Open Court is our adopted reading readiness program. This curriculum is designed to differentiate learning for every child in a literature-rich environment that will instill a lifelong passion for reading, writing, and all types of literature.

Although complete mastery is not expected, students are provided a wide range of learning experiences that will enable them to begin kindergarten with confidence. These educational areas include, but are not limited to:

  • OPreK Students sitting on rugral Language

  • Oral language skills

  • Listening skills

  • Phonetic awareness, phonics, and work knowledge

  • Story and comprehension skills

  • Math and Science

In addition to classroom activities, the students receive instruction each week in library, music, P.E. and spanish. During those times, enrichment teachers with specialized training for their particular area guide the children through lessons appropriate for their age level. Students also spend time in the computer lab at least once a week, developing basic skills in operating the equipment, manipulating age appropriate software and beginning to develop basic keyboarding skills.

St. John's Pre-K students attend Chapel three days a week. Bible stories are taught in the classroom and Christian morals are encouraged.
