Classroom
hours are 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Age requirement for this program is
five years old by September 1st.
St. John’s has developed a program for the kindergarten student that concentrates on strong reading and math skills with a variety of enrichment courses. Typically, a day in kindergarten would include reading, math, structured play (centers), enrichment classes, and group time (reading, singing, counting, and sharing). Science and social studies are integrated throughout the curriculum.
Open Court is our adopted reading and language arts program. The curriculum includes phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension and decoding skills to develop literacy success. Students will use these skills to enjoy both decodable texts and quality literature. Open Court is designed to instill passion in children for lifelong learning and a love of reading.
The mathematics curriculum, Everyday Mathematics,
emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic
skills. Manipulatives and learning by doing are important facets of the
math program. Topics students study include:

Discovery Works is our adopted science curriculum. Students learn science concepts through a balance of hands-on activities and are taught to use science process skills, critical thinking skills and scientific reasoning skills to help develop a foundation for science literacy. Looking at the Earth and Sky
Social studies concepts are taught using thematic units of study. Topics
relate to the holidays, seasons and community.
Students also receive instruction in spanish, P.E., library, and art.
Enrichment teachers with specialized training for their particular area
guide the students through lessons appropriate for their age level. Additionally,
students spend time in the computer lab once a week, developing basic
skills in operating the equipment, manipulating age appropriate software
and are introduced to basic keyboarding skills.
Kindergarten students attend Chapel three days a week. Bible stories
are taught in the classroom and Christian morals are encouraged.
