Fourth graders participate in a classroom discussion Classroom hours are 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Students will be responsible for assigned homework in all classes, notebook organization and long-term projects. Listening and self-discipline skills are of great importance as more time is devoted to lecture and independent work. An overview of the fourth grade program follows.

Reading
Open Court is our adopted curriculum which emphasizes learning through fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Students will complete various novel studies throughout the school year. Number the Stars, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and Saving Shiloh are examples of literature that may be read. Students also complete units of study over a variety of genre. The Accelerated Reader program is also used to build comprehension and track reading levels. Skills taught include:

  • Comprehension

  • Predicting, Verifying, and Clarifying

  • Vocabulary Development and Word Banks

  • Figurative Language

  • Cause/Effect

  • Fact/Opinion

  • Drawing Conclusions

Language Arts
In using the Open Court curriculum, students will learn the five stages of the "Writing Process" as well as, explore different styles of written communication through poetry, narratives, research reports, letters, paragraphs and several creative-writing projects. Grammar units will focus on:

  • Different Types of Sentences

  • Sentence Structure

  • Parts of Speech

  • Proofreading

  • Punctuation

Spelling
Open Court uses rules and patterns to teach phonetic and sight word spelling. In addition, our program emphasizes spelling correctly across the curriculum.

Handwriting
Zaner-Bloser is the guide for instruction and practice.

Mathematics
Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive math curriculum that embraces high expectations with hands-on learning. It is a curriculum that emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills. Students will receive instruction in the following:

  • All Number Computations and Comparisons through 999,999

  • Problem Solving using Exponents, Money, Missing Addends, Time, Averages and Square Roots

  • Calculations in Standard and Metric Measurement

  • Geometric Shapes and Naming of Fractions

  • Algorithms

  • World Tour Project (year-long project)

Social Studies
Student's study Texas History through Harcourt Horizon's Texas Edition. Students will gain skills in using maps and globes, reading skills, citizenship skills, and reading charts and graphs.

  • The Geography of Texas

  • Texas Long Ago

  • Colonies and Independence

  • Statehood and Seperation

  • Twentieth Century

  • Texas Today and Tomorrow

Science
Science activities provide for the teaching of the basic elements that make up the scientific method. Students will participate in Science Fair competition. Instruction includes, but is not limited to, the study of:

  • Earth's Land

  • Magnetism and Electricity

  • Classifying Living Things

  • Properties of Matter

  • Weather and Climates

In addition to classroom activities, the students receive instruction each week in Spanish, P.E., library, art, choir, and music to include recorder. During those times, enrichment teachers with specialized training for their particular area guide the children through lessons appropriate for their age level. They spend time in the computer lab, developing basic skills in operating the equipment, manipulating age appropriate software and continuing to practice keyboarding skills. Fourth grade students compete on an extra-curricular co-ed basketball team.

Fourth grade students attend Chapel three times a week, performing acolyte duties during All-School Chapel services. Bible stories are taught in the classroom and Christian morals are encouraged.
