Reading & Language Arts
Open Court is our adopted curriculum, which includes a phonics component, comprehension skills work, and extensive reading of both decodable texts and quality literature. This curriculum emphasizes learning through fluency, comprehension and writing. The students will explore a world of stories both real and fantasy. During the second semester, the Accelerated
Reader program is also used to build comprehension and track reading levels. Skills learned include:

Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive math curriculum that embraces high expectations with hands-on learning. It is a curriculum that emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills. Students will receive instruction in the following:

Numeration – counting, place value, fractions and money

Operation and Computation – addition, subtraction, and problem
solving

Data and Chance – graphing, probability, organizing data

Science
Discovery Works is our adopted science curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to have hands-on lab activities providing teaching of the basic elements while using the scientific method. Students will study:

Keeping Fit and Healthy (Body and Nutrition)
In addition to classroom activities, the students receive instruction
each week in spanish, P.E., music, library and art. During those times,
enrichment teachers with specialized training for their particular area
guide the children through lessons appropriate for their age level. They
spend time in the computer lab once a week, developing basic skills in
operating the equipment, manipulating age appropriate software and continuing
to practice basic keyboarding skills.
First grade students attend Chapel three times a week. Bible stories
are taught in the classroom and Christian morals are encouraged.
